Local Park Profile: Piney Wood Park

Playground for all ages next to a dog park

By Rachel Casipit, Publisher of Macaroni KID Durham and Chapel Hill/South Durham June 18, 2023

Piney Wood Park is one of our favorites! It is located on Woodcroft Parkway (not far from the intersection of Fayetteville Road) in the Woodlake neighborhood.

The playground features play structures for all ages. The swingset includes 2 regular swings and 2 bucket swings. There are several benches and picnic tables around the playground.

Piney Wood Park is home to one of Durham's four dog parks. The area for smaller dogs is located near the playground (see the fenced area beyond the picnic tables). Learn more about the dog park here. Dogs must be registered with Durham annually and provide proof of vaccination.

Piney Wood Park's picnic shelter is one of the largest available in Durham and has electrical outlets. From April 1 through October 31, it can be reserved. During the off season, the shelter is available for use on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rental fees are $80 Monday - Thursday and $105 on weekends for Durham City Residents (non-residents pay higher fees). Learn more and reserve the shelter here.

* Rental information current as of February 2023

In the woods next to the playground you'll find a rustic shelter and a bridge over a small stream. My kids really enjoy exploring this area. Little ones should use caution here.

From November through March, Piney Wood Park's restrooms are closed and the water fountains are turned off to protect the pipes.

Occasionally when we arrived in the late morning on a beautiful day, the parking lot was full (especially if a large birthday party is taking place). Street parking is available along the park's driveway.
